La Jolla Cave

1325 Cave Street, La Jolla, CA 92037    Map it.

La Jolla has seven caves that have been naturally formed by the ocean.  Five caves can only be seen from the ocean, one other cave can only be seen from the shore, and "The Sunny Jim Cave" that can be seen from the shore and accessed via a man made tunnel.  The Sunny Jim Cave is the largest of the seven caves.  These caves were formed by the ocean beating upon the cliffs and washing away the soft sandstone.

In 1902 Gustav Shultz and crew dug with pick and shovel a tunnel from the where now stands the Cave Store to the Sunny Jim Cave.  Several years latter 145 steps were built into the cave and latter lights were added.  Frank Baum writer of "The Wizard of Oz" named the cave after the likeness of W.W. Denslow's cartoon character Sunny Jim of the 1920's.

The Cave Store is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..  The cost is $4 for adults and $3 for children.  This price is provided for reference purpose and is subject to change.

There is a nice coffee shop just across the street.

Location

The La Jolla Cave is located just north of the Ellen Scripps Browning Park and at the foot of the La Jolla Downtown district near Coast Blvd and Prospect Street.

Afternoon/Morning Walk

A nice afternoon/morning outing is to start at the La Jolla Cave, past the Park, walk along the coast to the children's pool, and follow coast blvd to the end where Coast Blvd parts from the shoreline.  This area is known as Ellen Scripps Browning Park.  There are several small beaches to visit and swim at along the way.  You can see the Harbor Seals at the Children's pool.  The Park is great for snorkeling and diving.  Skilled surfers take to the water during high surf.

La Jolla Cave - Sunny Jim and Coast Blvd.

La Jolla and Coast Blvd. in San Diego

This is a very nice afternoon/morning outing.  It was a little expensive for what was offered.  After reaching the main part my children's response was, "Is this it?"  However, we had a lot of fun.  My children enjoyed walking up and down the steps.  Sunny Jim contributed to a very enjoyable afternoon.  These beaches are great for swimming, surfing during high surf, kayaking launched from La Jolla Shores, jogging, scuba diving, and restrooms are available.
